Do you have a pet bird? Polly is a very cute and fun little companion. However, your feathered pal does need a good amount of care. Here, a Bel Air, MD vet offers tips on keeping pet birds content.
Comfy Cage
Polly will need a clean, comfortable cage. The exact size and shape of cage she needs will depend on her size and breed, so you’ll need to do some research before shopping. We recommend getting the best and biggest cage you can afford. When you pick the cage out, pay attention to the materials used. Avoid anything that contains zinc or lead, which are toxic to birds. This is one thing worth splurging on: extra features, like playtops, are definitely worth the additional money. Keep your pet’s cage clean by separating cleaning tasks into daily, weekly, and monthly chores.
Stimulation
Store-bought toys are fine, but you can also make Polly’s playthings. Many common household items, like shower rings, playing cards, popsicle sticks, and even plain rice cakes, can make great bird toys. Change your winged buddy’s toys out regularly to keep things fun and fresh for her. Just be sure to avoid anything with small parts, sharp edges, dangling ropes, or decorative coating, like glitter.
Veterinary Care
Birds need proper veterinary care to stay healthy. Follow your vet’s recommended appointment schedule. At home, watch for signs of sickness, such as changes in waste; limping; lack of appetite; lethargy; and unusual posture, behavior, or vocalizations. Ask your vet for more information.
Perches
Polly should have several different perches, all of different strengths and materials. These should be cleaned weekly. Change them out frequently to keep your feathered friend from getting bored.
Good Food
Proper nutrition is crucial to your colorful little pal’s health. Different types of birds have slightly different dietary needs. Ask your vet for specific advice on Polly’s menu, including serving sizes, suitable snacks, and safe and unsafe foods.
Birdproofing
Polly will need time out of her cage every day. Before you let your winged friend out to play, make your home safe by turning off fans, closing large appliances, and removing dangerous items. Ask your vet for recommendations.
