Hydrotherapy

Has your pet recently undergone surgery or experienced an injury that is affecting mobility? Hydrotherapy might be the ideal solution.

At Animal Medical Center of Bel Air, we pride ourselves on remaining at the forefront of advances in veterinary medicine. As such, we are pleased to offer a number of advanced, innovative and integrative therapy options, including hydrotherapy. If your pet is recovering from injury or surgery or is struggling with illness or age-related mobility issues, hydrotherapy can help.

What is hydrotherapy?

Hydrotherapy uses an underwater treadmill to administer rehabilitation and therapy. This practice uses the inherent properties of water, including relative density, buoyancy and resistance to deliver treatment in a way that is safe and comfortable. Because of these properties, the patient can move in a way that is functional, muscle challenging and mechanically correct without being painful.

Hydrotherapy reduces the pressure on tender joints, relaxes sore muscles and improves mobility and flexibility, enabling faster recovery from surgery or injury.

What are the benefits of hydrotherapy?

Rehabilitation therapy using an underwater treadmill has been proven to be effective at improving:

  • Strength
  • Muscle endurance
  • Range of motion
  • Cardiovascular endurance
  • Agility
  • Mental psyche

Hydrotherapy can also be a great exercise option for pets who are overweight or elderly because it reduces stress on the bones and joints.

What can hydrotherapy treat?

Many conditions can benefit from hydrotherapy, but it is primarily used to treat anything that causes lack of strength or decreased range of motion. Some of the cases we have successfully handled at Animal Medical Center of Bel Air include:

  • Post-surgical recovery
  • Muscle strains
  • Disk disease
  • Joint pain and inflammation
  • Spinal cord injuries
  • Nerve damage
  • Hip replacement recovery/rehabilitation
  • Arthritis

If your pet suffers from any of the above conditions or is struggling with mobility issues, hydrotherapy may be the ideal solution. Contact the dedicated team at Animal Medical Center of Bel Air to learn more or to schedule a consultation.
